How To Repair A Metal Roof

Metal roofing is revered for its strength and durability. However, Australia is also infamous for its wild weather. From gnarly heat to thunderous storms and everything in between, all Aussie roofs are susceptible to the country’s unpredictable climate. Therefore, if your metal roof has been hit by something big in the last few days, you’re probably wondering how you can go about repairing it.

Naturally, the best thing to do is to call in the experts, as they have the skills, experience and technology to ensure your roof is functioning better than it was before it was damaged.

But, if you want to go the DIY route, here are some top tips on how to go about repairing your damaged roof:

Types of roof damage

There are five main types of roof damage your home may be experiencing and that require urgent repair:

  1. Damaged panels: Roof panels can easily become damaged in a wild storm. Hail, heavy winds and other inclement weather can easily distort roofing panels and this can leave your home susceptible to leaks and other problems.

To repair: You must replace the damaged panel with a brand new panel or patch it with a colour and material that resembles your pre-existing roofing.

  2. Leaking seams: Your roofing seams can easily deteriorate over time. This, of course, doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the weather, but just the ravages of time taking their toll in your seams.

To repair: Get up on the roof and reseal the leaking area with a roofing sealant or silicone-based caulk solution.

  3. Loose fasteners: Roof fasteners can always become loose – you will be able to tell if your roof starts to make a loud rattling during high wind or if you notice leaks. To be sure, get up on the roof and attempt to spin the washers – if you can spin them then you have your answer – your fasteners are loose.

To repair: It’s a simple job of tightening your fasteners or replacing the screws altogether.

  4. Rust spots: Rust spots are not only unsightly but they can also continue to deteriorate and cause holes in your roof. This is the last thing you want to happen as once holes occur they can be quite difficult to fix.

To repair: You have to clean the rusted area before priming it and coating the roofing with a rust-resistant paint.

  5. Screws: Screws – like fasteners – can become loose or wear over time. Unfortunately, this can cause further problems for your roofing, as the panels can become loose or your roof might experience leaks during a storm. As such, you will want to ensure that your screws are tightly sealed to ensure your roof is safe from problems.

To repair: Like fasteners, you can easily replace the screws or seal the loose spots with roof sealant.

But it might just be best to call in the pros
